Positive Schemes for Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws

Abstract Friedrichs has constructed positive difference schemes for solving linear symmetric hyperbolic systems in any number of space dimensions. Such schemes are very stable, but they are only of first ordeer accuracy.By using a nonlinear switch between a second order and a first order scheme one can construct positive second order schemes of good accuracy.

Hyperbolic systems of conservation laws that have a positive entropyy are symmetric and can be solved approximately by positive schemes; numerical experiments show excellent results for computing complicated flows.
