Spectral-based Methods for Edge Detection

Abstract We present several spectral-data based techniques for detecting edges, jump discontinuities, in one-dimensional data. In each technique, we make use of the Fourier coefficients of the data to produce a function that tends to zero far from the jumps and to the values of the jumps at the jumps' locations. Most of the results can be proved using elementary techniques and provide beautiful examples of the applications of these techniques. This is joint work with Professor Eitan Tadmor of the University of Maryland.
